As I type I have an impacted wisdom tooth causing an infection in my jaw. Needless to say eating has been a bit of a chore lately. So it seems a bit strange that now, of all times, I should have a craving for crispy-crunchy breakfast cereals. On my most recent trip to the supermarket I walked away with not one, but three boxes of cereal - something I haven't bought in ages. I'm usually a slice-o-toast girl but it's been too difficult to nibble on the crusts, so I've taken to scooping up little spoonfuls of slightly soggy cereal each morn. So, which of the multitude of cereals on offer in the breakfast foods aisle caught my eye?If you read my most recent post, you would know that I am now the international spokesperson for the wonder-grain Amaranth. So how could I pass up a chance to try Orgran's 100% Amaranth Puffed Cereal. As the name suggests, it's nothing but amaranth that has been popped the same way popcorn does. These teeny tiny grains are light and pretty tastless, but make the perfect addition to more traditional (less expensive!) cereals like good-ol' cornflakes. The suggestion on the box also recommends sprinkling some on ice cream or cakes (I dare you). The description also boasts that amaranth contains significant amounts of all 8 essential amino acids we humans need, as well as the lesser amino acids. I payed a little over $3 for 100g, which I found pretty reasonable and am definitely willing to part with the cash again for such a simple and natural boost of protein.
See the pictured serving suggestion on the box? Yes, I was suckered in, and bought myself a box of You'll love Coles Corn Flakes. I looked at a few other brands of flakes, but found most to contain lactose or milk solids, so check the ingredients next time. So here's my breakfast from this morning: corn flakes, amaranth and a bit of rice bran for shits and giggles.
I said I bought three types of cereal didn't I? Well I left the best for last. I also treated myself to a box of Kellogs Coco Pops, because I am 8 years old and they are amazing. The Kellogs ones are veegz, but the el cheapo ones aren't so I had to pay a little extra for the flashy branding.I'm not a complete child! I stirred in some amaranth to ease my guilty conscience.

Are Kellogs Coco Pops ninja-vegan?? Awesome. I gotta get me some.
Hope your jaw gets better :(
I love Coco Pops and Coco Pop Crunchers (I don't think you get those though). I just checked the Kelloggs.au site~ Australian Coco The Monkey is nothing like the British one! How very weird!
Ow! A jaw infection sounds nasty - I hope it clears up soon.
I have heeded your hard-sell on amaranth and am planning to grab some next time I'm at Allergy Block. :-)
